Avon Place Resident is Ready Celebrates Her 102nd Birthday!

March 1, 2019
Fran was born in the Bronx, NYC on March 23, 1917. Her parents, who were of immigrant parents, were Louise and James. She has 3 sisters Marion, Evelyn and Louise, all who have deceased. They lived in a Czechoslovakian neighborhood across from the 3rd Ave.

Fran went to St. Augustine Catholic School and from there went to Evander Child HS in the Bronx, where she took Bookkeeping and later graduated from. The family then moved to Mickle Ave in the Bronx, near Allerton Ave. She had lots of friends from Allerton Ave and that is where she met her husband David when she was 14. They started dating when she was 16 and were married when David was in the Army before his deployment to Edinburg Scotland in WW II. David was a Lieutenant in France in the Medical Branch of the Army.

After graduation, Fran worked as a bookkeeper in Bloomingdales. After the war, David also worked in Bloomingdales as an accountant. After they married, they moved to the Upper East Side of Manhattan.

While on vacation to Phoenix Arizona to visit Davis’s brother, David met a representative from UJA who saw what a great speaker David was and convinced him to work for UJA as a top solicitor for the organization. He raised donations for the (then) newly formed Israeli State and other Jewish organizations which helped the many Jewish refugees who had survived the Holocaust. They were from the US, Europe and the ones who had immigrated to the newly formed country of Isreal. David and Fran traveled to Tel Aviv several times where David was acknowledged for his excellent work with the organization.

From that point, they moved all over the country with UJA. They lived in 41 states. David was with them for 10 years. Fran traveled with him from place to place doing his typing and bookwork and finally learned to drive so that she could help with the driving.

Through all their travels they always came home for the holidays to spend time with family.
On a trip to Lorain Ohio, with UJA, they decided that they loved the area, the people and the Oberlin Golf Club course. They took one lesson and were hooked. Fran was an active member of the Oberlin Golf Club for over 50 years for which she ran many campaigns and charity events. She was also a great golfer - playing several times a week sometimes twice a day. She was also very involved with the community and had many close friends whom she spent time with every week.

Fran had many friends and went on many exciting trips such as a cruise around the world with her friend Marion and trips to Europe, Hawaii, and Florida with her best and dearest friend Jenny. Fran and Jenny moved into assisted living together and shared an apartment until Jenny passed away a few years ago. She misses her very much. Fran has undoubtedly had an exciting and lively life and is still healthy. She resides at Avon Place in Avon, Ohio.
