Managing hydration is important in both older adults and those who receive dialysis due to increased susceptibility to fluid imbalances. Older adults often have diminished thirst perception and reduced kidney function, making them prone to dehydration. Some ways for dialysis patients to manage their fluid intake are managing your thirst with sugar-free hard candy, frozen fruit, or ice chips, managing your sodium intake, tracking fluid intake, and avoiding spicy or salty foods that increase thirst.
Adequate hydration supports kidney function, aids in toxin removal, and helps maintain electrolyte balance. Therefore, monitoring fluid intake closely and understanding individual needs are essential to ensuring optimal health. Working with your healthcare team to manage your fluid needs is crucial.
